Contrary to popular belief, shedding is normal. Yes, just like your natural hair, your wigs will shed. But before you stress, take a deep breath and keep reading. Some shedding is usually normal and can be easily managed.
Shedding vs Excessive Shedding
Imagine this: you comb out your hair, and a few strands fall out. Totally normal, right? The same goes for wigs. Some shedding is natural, especially when washing, combing, or handling your wig. However, if you're noticing bald spots or handfuls of hair coming loose, that's a sign of excessive shedding and will require some attention.
Wig TLC: Your Key to Minimized Shedding
Here's the good news: with proper care, you can significantly minimize shedding and extend the lifespan of your wig. Let's get into some tips!
1. Storage: Just like you wouldn't leave your favourite dress crumpled in a corner, give your wigs a cool, dry home. Satin bags are your best friend here – they help prevent drying, a major culprit of shedding. Air tight plastic bags, like a ziplock are also a great option.2. Wash Day Done Right: Use sulfate-free shampoos and quality hair products specifically designed to nourish and moisturize. When washing, detangle gently from the ends up, and avoid balling up your wig – this creates tangles that lead to more shedding later.
3. Limit Heat Styling: We all love styling our wigs, but heat can damage the hair and cause breakage (aka shedding). Always use a heat protectant spray before styling to keep your wig looking its best. Right now, I am obsessed with the Chi 44 Iron Guard. Some other great options are the Color WOW Dream Coat and the TRESemme Heat Tamer
4. Condition with Caution: Conditioner is great for your hair, but go easy on your wig. Avoid applying conditioner directly to the knots, as this can loosen them and lead to shedding and even balding.
5. Quality is Key: Let's face it, a well-made wig sheds less. Investing in a quality raw hair wig might seem pricier upfront, but it will save you money and frustration in the long run. You can find excellent quality raw hair wigs that last for years here.
6. Show Your Wig Some Love: Handle your wig with care, just like you would your natural hair. Constant pulling and rubbing can loosen strands and lead to shedding.
7. Moisture is Key: Especially during dry seasons, keeping your wig moisturized is crucial. Deep conditioning treatments are a great way to replenish moisture and minimize shedding. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, consult a professional hairstylist to avoid damaging your wig.
8. Coloured Wigs Need Extra Care: Coloured or bleached hair is more prone to shedding. Consider investing in raw hair wigs, as they are ideal for achieving coloured looks without causing hair damage. For best results, have them done by a professional to minimize any potential damage.
Thank you for reading all the way through. Remember, with some care, you can prevent your wig from shedding and keep it looking great for a long time.
